This week we have focused on the line of inquiry 'The states of matter' - specifically gas. We began with some paired research in books to find key words and form a definition. We had fun blowing up balloons and blowing bubbles outside. We noticed some bubbles bounced on the ground, the smaller ones floated higher and some were double doubles stuck together. We saw rainbows in lots of the bubbles too. We are now knowledgeable about the names of some gases. We breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. To develop our research skills of observation further we did an experiment with soda water. First we made still water into soda water in the class with a soda stream machine. Next we looked at, listened to and tasted the soda water and recorded our first observations. Next we made predictions about what would happen to the drink in 2 hours time. Then we repeated the same observations 2 more times through the day. We found out that there were fewer gas bubbles in the drink by the end of the day. Our final liquid and gas exploration was a bubble painting activity. We blew bubbles into paint and made some lovely bubble painting creations. We also tried blowing along the paper to see what happened.

Sophie brought in things to make a lava lamp. She taught us about the liquids water and oil and their weight. Oil is lighter than water so it floats on top. When she added the fizzy tablet to the mixture it made gas bubbles of carbon dioxide. We also added some glitter too! Feras baked a cake at home and shared in a movie all about the ingredients and the process to change it from liquid to solid by baking. We decided this change was irreversible. Daniyal presented a slide show about the forms of solids, liquids and gases by using water as an example. We were interested to find out that gas is thinner than air. Rei showed us an experiment using bottles of sprite and different sweets. We had to guess which sweet would make the most gas. Most of us though mentos! It was great fun to watch all the bubbles of sprite overflowing out of the bottle. Surprisingly it was the vitamin sweet that made the most gas bubbles. Viggo shared his research about solids, liquids and gases. We were interested to find out more about fire. Is it a state of matter? What about smoke?
We practised our research skills to find out what the definition of a liquid is by reading from non-fiction books. We found key words and noted them on post-its to share with the class. Then we came up with a collective definition from the information we had found and shared. This week we have become more knowledgeable about solids and liquids.
Ceyone brought in containers of liquid which he requested to be put in the freezer in the morning ready for his show and tell in the afternoon. When we took them out we discovered they liquid had frozen solid and it was ice-cream! While enjoying our ice-cream we watched it begin to melt and discussed the changes that had taken place, learning new vocabulary reversible and irreversible. Tyler showed us an example of a dehumidifier that he uses at home. This is an excellent example to support our 3rd line of inquiry 'manipulating matter for everyday problems'. He showed us a photo of a before and after picture, a lot of water gets absorbed over time. We were very curious about how it works and will explore one in the class next week. We learned about the word absorb with a water and sponge demonstration.
To begin our next Literacy unit with a focus on procedural writing we made some butter and jam sandwiches. Then we ordered pictures of the steps we took to make the sandwich and talked about sentences which would match each picture. Finally we wrote our own instructions to explain how to make a jam sandwich.
To tune in to our new unit of inquiry with the central idea 'Properties of Matter Change' we spent some time exploring and describing many different examples of matter. We recorded words to describe their properties as well as questions we had. We had lots of fun exploring the different textures.
Wednesday was Maths Day at ISS. We came dressed in numbers and patterns. We spent time competing on Mathletics against students in other parts of the world as well as other students in the school and class who were logged on at the same time. We also went to see the puzzles the other classes in the school had made and spent time solving as many as we could.
To celebrate book character day in Grade 1 we wrote a collaborative story involving all our characters! It's pasted below the photos of all our great costumes. The Elsa and Other Book Characters Adventure of Justice
One cold winter day in a kingdom called Arandelle there was a strange event. Elsa woke up to find there were three of her - triplets! Her sister Anna was so surprised! Suddenly spider man snuck in and fell down. He had broken his bone. Harry Potter appeared and used his wand to magically fix him. Up in the dark tower was evil Maleficent. She asked them all if she could be their friend. But they said no! They got into a big fight, good vs evil. Soon Greg from Diary of a Wimpy Kid came to make them laugh. Mr Happy also rushed in to tell a joke and make everyone happy. Then Petey tried to steal all their money so Dogman (who had just eaten a lot of breakfast) found him but Petey made a trap. Soon some ISS students came to help - they also saved a stolen diamond. Matilda asked if everyone wanted to go to the beach to celebrate Elsa’s birthday. Black Princess agreed because she also wanted to be friends. Super girl flew in out of nowhere, she was amazed at everything that was going on. Next Elmer came walking inside, but broke the front door. He made a huge rainbow in the place of the door. He had brought a rooster with him. Now the ISS students and princesses had started fighting. Captain America then came in and split them all up so they wouldn’t fight. Spider man also helped by making dog man sleep for long hours. Then Maleficent was so scared she would die, but she had a plan up her sleeve. She took control of half of the goodies. But it was so good. Salma the fairy put a fire on the kingdom and time was running out. Soon the fire chief came to the rescue, he splashed water on the fire just in time. It started snowing too. Spider man set out some webs to catch all the evil characters. Dogman took all the bad characters to jail. The good characters all lived happily ever after. This week we have gone back to our Year Long unit Who We Are: Communities can be diverse. To explore the line of inquiry 'how communities evolve' we watched some videos about Singapore in the past, We were very interested to find out more about land reclamation and that new parts of Singapore are still being made today. We worked in groups, and focussing on using our social skills, to plan a new community for the new development being made in Tekong Island. First we listed all the places we thought should be included, next we drew a plan of the proposed layout. Finally we build scale models using blocks, lego and magnetic cubes.
This week we began our measurement unit for Maths. We started with a brainstorm of types of measurement that we knew. Height, length, weight, capacity, temperature and time were what we came up with. Next we wrote questions we had about measuring and did a question sort to put the questions into categories. Then we began some measuring activities in the classroom with cubes. Several of us wanted to know how long the classroom was using cubes. We each made a prediction. After building a long line of cubes from one end of the class to the other we needed a way to count them easily. Ceyone suggested we use post it notes to keep track of the numbers. Takumi suggested we should count in tens. Zoe suggested using a set of ten to mark on top each time to make it faster for counting all the tens. With these ideas we set to work, counting, marking and labelling. Next we had some 'double checkers' that came behind to make sure it was accurate. The final cube count was 590. A few of us were quite close in our estimate.
