As a provocation for our Science unit about food chains we went to the school gardens to do a 'walk about, talk about' activity. We searched for animals and thought about what they eat, looking for clues around us.

We have been doing some colour theory work and combining this with our knowledge of emotions. After making our own colour wheels by mixing the primary colours we labelled each section with an appropriate emotion and then a small emoji. Next we drew 4 different emotions on a face and painted them with a colour we thought connected to the emotion being shown by the facial expression. Our final pieces will be ready next week.
Daniyal started us off for this round of show and tell by sharing a book he had written and illustrated about animals and their emotions. We enjoyed exploring different emotions from an animals perspective. Tyler T read as a book called 'Be Brave Little Penguin'. We discussed how the penguins emotions changed from the beginning to the end of the book. Szofia made a game for us to play. She had funny video clips but challenged us to watch them without laughing. It was hard, but some of us managed to keep a straight face! Viggo presented a show and tell related to our money unit. We were really interested to see different currency from Denmark and curious about why some of the coins had holes in the middle of them. Perhaps for a necklace or wearing on a belt as we had seen in a book? Yuer read a book to us called The Way I Feel. We were interested about the colours used on each page and how they related to the emotions. Haruto showed us a video of a sorting activity he did with his books. He sorted books into different emotion categories and made a visual bar graph. He found out he had the most funny books and the least angry books. Shuhan wrote her own story about friends and their different emotions. She illustrated the front cover with examples of different emotion emojis. Lucia shared a digital presentation she had made all about emotions that people have in different scenarios each day. She also showed us an emotion painting for happiness that she create herself. Rei shared about dogs and cats showing their emotions through their body language and the way their tails appear. She had illustrations to explain each emotion clearly.
We have been re-visiting our reading routines for ‘Read to Self’, ‘Read to Someone’ and ‘Listen to Reading’. Now we are ready to begin making responsible reading choices in the coming weeks.
As our first tuning in activity for our new unit we were given pictures of emotion face masks which had been all cut up. We worked together as a group to put the puzzles together and then label each mask with what emotion we thought it was displaying. This was the start of our emotions vocabulary building. Our second tuning in activity was done through our senses. We took part in different tasting, smelling, touching, listening and looking experiences and said how we felt before and after each experience. Again this helped us build our vocabulary, become more aware of our emotions and also prompted us to think of several questions related to our emotions. We discovered that some of us felt different emotions even though the experiences were all the same. We were all great Risk Takers too.
We've had a fun few days catching up with old friends and making new friends. Our focus for inquiry this week was in our year long ‘Who We Are’ unit with the central idea ‘Communities can be diverse’. We focused on the line of inquiry ‘how communities evolve’. Our class community has evolved over the holidays, we said goodbye to two friends and have now welcomed two new friends. To build our community we placed the game ‘find someone who’ and learned some interesting facts about each other. We also began work on some self portraits to form a new display of all the members of our class community. We were given 5 colours of paints and had to mix them to make our correct skin tone. We enjoyed experimenting with different tints to achieve a close match.
