To celebrate book character day in Grade 1 we wrote a collaborative story involving all our characters! It's pasted below the photos of all our great costumes. The Elsa and Other Book Characters Adventure of Justice
One cold winter day in a kingdom called Arandelle there was a strange event. Elsa woke up to find there were three of her - triplets! Her sister Anna was so surprised! Suddenly spider man snuck in and fell down. He had broken his bone. Harry Potter appeared and used his wand to magically fix him. Up in the dark tower was evil Maleficent. She asked them all if she could be their friend. But they said no! They got into a big fight, good vs evil. Soon Greg from Diary of a Wimpy Kid came to make them laugh. Mr Happy also rushed in to tell a joke and make everyone happy. Then Petey tried to steal all their money so Dogman (who had just eaten a lot of breakfast) found him but Petey made a trap. Soon some ISS students came to help - they also saved a stolen diamond. Matilda asked if everyone wanted to go to the beach to celebrate Elsa’s birthday. Black Princess agreed because she also wanted to be friends. Super girl flew in out of nowhere, she was amazed at everything that was going on. Next Elmer came walking inside, but broke the front door. He made a huge rainbow in the place of the door. He had brought a rooster with him. Now the ISS students and princesses had started fighting. Captain America then came in and split them all up so they wouldn’t fight. Spider man also helped by making dog man sleep for long hours. Then Maleficent was so scared she would die, but she had a plan up her sleeve. She took control of half of the goodies. But it was so good. Salma the fairy put a fire on the kingdom and time was running out. Soon the fire chief came to the rescue, he splashed water on the fire just in time. It started snowing too. Spider man set out some webs to catch all the evil characters. Dogman took all the bad characters to jail. The good characters all lived happily ever after.

This week we have gone back to our Year Long unit Who We Are: Communities can be diverse. To explore the line of inquiry 'how communities evolve' we watched some videos about Singapore in the past, We were very interested to find out more about land reclamation and that new parts of Singapore are still being made today. We worked in groups, and focussing on using our social skills, to plan a new community for the new development being made in Tekong Island. First we listed all the places we thought should be included, next we drew a plan of the proposed layout. Finally we build scale models using blocks, lego and magnetic cubes.
This week we began our measurement unit for Maths. We started with a brainstorm of types of measurement that we knew. Height, length, weight, capacity, temperature and time were what we came up with. Next we wrote questions we had about measuring and did a question sort to put the questions into categories. Then we began some measuring activities in the classroom with cubes. Several of us wanted to know how long the classroom was using cubes. We each made a prediction. After building a long line of cubes from one end of the class to the other we needed a way to count them easily. Ceyone suggested we use post it notes to keep track of the numbers. Takumi suggested we should count in tens. Zoe suggested using a set of ten to mark on top each time to make it faster for counting all the tens. With these ideas we set to work, counting, marking and labelling. Next we had some 'double checkers' that came behind to make sure it was accurate. The final cube count was 590. A few of us were quite close in our estimate.
This week we made iMovies by combining images of different emotions and adding music and sound effects that we thought matched the images. It was lots of fun. You can watch all our videos below.
Emma played a game of charades with us. She acted out different emotions (happy, sad, mad, tired, embarrassed, excited) and we had turns at guessing each one. She also showed us different emoji's she had drawn to match with each emotion. Una shared two electronic toys with us. The first was 'bop it', she demonstrated how to play it and said it made her feel mad! Then Una showed us how her MIP robot works with hand movements as well as being connected to a phone, she feels happy when she plays with it. We were interested to see the different movements and actions of the robot. Do robots have emotions? Takumi shared about the actions of a cat, dog and octopus when they are feeling angry. Cats puff up their fur, dogs bark and an octopus squirts ink.
In groups we were presented with a picture card and some guiding questions. What happened? How did the people feel? Why did they feel that way? How do you know? After discussing the scenarios in our small groups we then presented our picture card and summary of our discussion to the rest of the class.
For our science lesson this week we discussed different foods that animals eat and learned the three categories 'carnivores', 'herbivores' and 'omnivores'. We had lots of toy animals and sorted them into these three different categories. Some were a little bit tricky!
Keigo showed us his research about positive and negative emotions. He shared a picture of 100 different emojis with us. Anjali presented a list of some different good and bad emotions and then made a game for the class to play. We had to guess which emotion word went with each emoji she had designed. Tyler Y played us a video of him playing the piano. He played a song in 3 different ways to demonstrate angry, happy and sad. He described the musical terms fortissimo, forte and piano which helped him play the keyboard to express the 3 different emotions. Tomoki showed us a slideshow presentation he had made all about different types of weather and emotions connected to weather. Feras showed us an emotions guessing game video clip, we enjoyed playing it and guess which emotion matched each facial expression shown on the screen. Ashritha shared a song she wrote to express emotions and then did a quiz to check people's listening skills during the song. Zoe showed us different coloured emoji's and explained an example for when we would experience each emotion. She designed her own emoji for calm.
