To make a connection between our Who We Are unit and our How We Organise Ourselves unit Grade 1 held a mini food fair in the classroom. A huge thank you to all the parents for sending in such delicious food. As we had been inquiring into our diverse class community, sampling a range of diverse foods helped the children gain a deeper understanding about what diversity is. Trying foods from different cultures and countries also helped us with our line of inquiry 'Different foods people eat'. The children were Open Minded and Risk Takers about trying new foods. They also showed respect by politely expressing their views on the different foods they tasted. To continue our inquiry into the different foods people we eat we did a sorting activity. Each group had pictures of different foods and was asked to sort the foods into groups. There was some discussion amongst the groups about how best to group the foods. After each group presented their final sorting we went further into some research together about different food groups and how they can make up a balanced diet. To make conclusions from our learning we began to create our own balanced plate of food for a meal.

This year in Grade 1 we will be enjoying the advantages of the new PYP enhancements to the curriculum. One these is the flexibility of timing for each of our units of inquiry. Our 'Who We Are' unit with the central idea 'Communities can be diverse' will run as a year long unit. As the year progresses we will inquire into many communities within the school and Singapore. We learned a lot about the diverse communities our classmates come from during our guess who game.
During our first week of Grade 1 we spent time being communicators, getting to know new friends and getting to know our friends from last year better. We played '4 corners' and 'find someone' to learn new facts about everyone. For Literacy work we launched 'Read to Self' by choosing our reading books, learning three ways to read a book and finding a good spot for reading in the room to build our reading stamina. So far we are up to 21 minutes of uninterrupted reading. This is the record in Mrs. Hayward's Grade 1 class so far! For Maths work we explored many of our classroom resources and learned some new games to help with our counting and fast fact adding. The favourite class game is poison number! To help us remember the ISS '4 Be's' we worked in groups and made our own 'looks like', 'sounds like' posters. Then we planned with our group how to make model bee. Soon we will have 4 bees hanging in our room to remind us to 'Be safe', 'Be Honest', 'Be Respectful' and 'Be Responsible'.
