This week we had a special guest speaker to our class, Ms Berna, the school counsellor. She did some activities with us to help us become great emotion detectives. We listened to sound clips from movies and had to guess what emotion each person was feeling, this sharpened our listening skills. We had a look at some photos and described people’s emotions to sharpen our observations skills. Finally we practiced asking each other ‘Are you ok?' We look forward to playing some of the games Ms Berna left in the class for us.

Ian was a risk-taker and chose to be the first to present for show and tell in Grade One. He shared a selection of photographs with us and told us what emotions they showed. There was happy, excited, scared and loved. We had some interesting discussions about the emotions people can have when looking at photos as well as why people take photos. We talked about memories, both happy and sad and that photography is a special way of expressing emotions. Coco was a thinker and chose to combine her spelling homework with her show and tell. She used cut out letters to build her spelling words. She explained that at first she felt tired because she was making each letter by hand but then her mum found some stickers and it was much easier. Then she felt happy. At the end Coco explained she was proud of her completed work. Imran was a communicator when he explained all about his visit to a flight simulator with his dad. He said at first he was really scared and nervous because he thought it was real and he was going to crash. He explained he was also really excited because he couldn’t wait to touch the switches. At the end when he had finished in the flight simulator he felt really happy.
This week we combined our knowledge of colours and facial expression to create some emotion portraits. We made different faces in the mirror and drew what we saw. Next we added a colour wash over our portraits to help express the different emotions shown.
We started using the chrome books in class this week and made our essential agreements about how to use them safely and responsibly. Soon we will start using the iPads too.
We practiced making all our spelling words from magnetic letters. This helped us to focus on the letters and sounds in each word.
To continue with the concept Perspective we did some research to find out different teachers' perspectives on what makes them happy. We found out things like, riding bikes, sunsets, families, seeing other people being happy and seeing children enjoy reading. When we had completed our research and shared our findings with the class we also reflected on our own feelings during the activity. Some of said we felt nervous and scared at first when talking to new people but happy and calm afterwards. Some of us felt confident and excited about talking to new people.
This week we used the concept of Perspective to explore how different colours can be used to express emotions and that different people might associate different colours with different emotions. For example, red means angry to some and love to others. We read 'The Colour Monster' book which helped us understand about sorting emotions and colours. Then we had a go by ourselves with lots of emotions words and 6 colours. Next we compared with a friend to see their perspective and to explain our own perspective. We learned how to mix primary colours to make secondary colours and then drew some different emotion faces and wrote some words to match with the colours. Next week we will use this knowledge to make some different emotion portraits.
