On Tuesday we had mystery readers from grade 4 come to visit our class. They read us stories in pairs and some of us also read to them. We enjoyed this time with other children from ISS reading to us.

For the past few weeks in maths we have been focusing on measurement and the use of non standard measures. We have used many classroom objects to measure length, height, weight and capacity. We visited the garden to do some measuring of heights and lengths. We went to the sandpit to compare capacities of containers by using sand.
This week we read the story of Stone Soup as it connected with our Unit of Inquiry. As the moral of the story is about sharing and teamwork we decided to work as a team in Grade 1.1 to make some soup for ourselves. As a class we decided which vegetable we could each bring and someone said they would bring bread. On Thursday we worked together to wash, peel, chop and slice all the vegetables for our soup. At the end of the day we had a bowl of freshly made soup. We were all risk takers and tried a little bit. Some of us enjoyed it so much we had three helpings!
The last week and a half of Show and Tell has been an excellent learning experience for all of grade 1.1. We have collected a variety of food wrappers from around the globe and mapped these outside our classroom on a large world map poster. We discovered that most food in Singapore is imported from other countries. Bread and goats milk were two packages of food from Singapore. Some foods come from countries close by such as Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. Other foods come from much further away in North and South America and France, Germany and the UK. We had an informative Show and Tell from Shoichi who explained the process of seaweed growing, picking, drying, packaging and shipping to countries all around the world. Sosuke shared a package of cereal that had been bought in Japan and posted to him in Singapore as he can't buy it in the shops here. Hugh brought in a tea packet that he had brought from England. We discussed food miles and had a class debate during a P4C (Philosophy for Children) time about pollution from planes flying food around the world. Holly talked about getting eggs from her grandmothers chicken and Hugh talked about getting vegetables from his own garden.
In class we read a book about how orange juice is made. At the back there was a recipe with instructions explaining how to make frozen ice lollies with orange juice. Some children wanted to try and make them. We each took turns at pouring the juice into the moulds and after a day in the freezer they were ready to eat. This helped us explore the concept of change and our line of inquiry about how food becomes edible. We also learned about procedural writing and did some shared writing as a class about how to make orange ice lollies. While we were eating the ice lollies we watched this video about making orange juice. www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8KJGtMGMSY
We did a lunch box investigation and sorted out what we already knew about our lunches and noted our wonderings help us try and discover more about the food we eat. We want to know about countries that our food comes from and how some foods grow. We also are interested in healthy foods. After our trip to Hay Dairy we read a book about cows milk and found out that cream is part of milk. We were then given a small jar of cream and were told we would have to shake it for a long time. We predicted it might change colour, go fluffy, go watery and thin or even explode! After a lot of shaking it turned harder and some liquid separated. We had several ideas about what we had made. These included cheese, egg, cake and the correct answer butter. Next we spread some of our homemade butter on bread to give it a taste. Most of us enjoyed it, a few of us didn't like the taste but were all risk takers and gave it a go.
Welcome back and Happy New Year! This week we began our new unit of inquiry 'How we organise ourselves' and our central idea is 'Food goes through a journey to get to our plates'. On Wednesday morning we visited Hay Dairy Goat Farm. We saw the goats being milked and then had a change to feed and pet the goats. We learned that the goats food is from Australia and the their dried grass is from America. After the goats have been milked the milk must be refrigerated straight away and it is put in a cooled tank. We tasted chocolate flavoured goats milk from the dairy at lunch time. To find out more about Hay Dairy in Singapore check out their website. www.haydairies.com.sg/
On Tuesday we enjoyed a visit to the market stalls grade 5 set up. We played games, had face paint and nail polish and enjoyed different food and drinks.
This week we visited the garden to do some sketching. We brought magnifying glasses so we could closely observe the details we were drawing. We tried to use different line types to show the texture of the objects we were sketching.
Some of the children in Grade 1.1 learn to play musical instruments in lessons outside of school and at ECA's. We had performances from Erica on the piano, Hugh on the recorder, Holly on the ukulele, Gracie on the keyboard and Athan on the xylophone. Mrs Hayward played the clarinet. Everyone enjoyed experiencing the music with their hearing and sight and some children commented that the performers also used their sense of touch.
