We have been inquiring into people's actions and beliefs when they loose a tooth. There are many traditions around the world. We made a video explaining our actions and beliefs in grade 1.1. We read 'This Whole Tooth Fairy Thing Is Nothing But A Big Rip Off' and listened to 'Throw Your Tooth On The Rood' on the ipads.

Seeun showed the class some photos of Korean fortune pockets. It is traditional to keep them during lunar holidays and people in their family give money to keep inside. They believe they will have good fortune when the fortune pocket is full. This is Athan with a special Indonesian puppet and his prayer math. Athan told us he prays five times a day on this mat. Julien showed the class some photos of St Nicholas and a famous statue in Belgium. He also brought in his French flag. Antoine, who is also French was very excited about helping Julien hold up the big flag. This is Hugh, he joined our class at the beginning of the week from England. He showed us a photo of his class in England on a school trip to the seaside. He said the photo is special to him because it shows his friends. Hugh also brought in a photo of his good friend and himself playing in his garden in England. This photo prompted Hugh to tell us about lots of memories he has of his garden, the pond, trees and fruits/vegetables. Erica showed us two special ornaments that her and her sister had painted themselves. Erica's is a spotty fish. They are special to Erica because they remind her of a the good time she had making them in Australia.
Watch the video of us rapping 'I PICK'. It reminds us how to choose good books for our daily 5 reading work.
who we areCentral Idea: People's actions are a reflection of their beliefs. This week we started 'show and tell' with children bringing in items which are special to their culture and traditions. Gracie's American flag is special to her because she got it here in Singapore at the American Embassy when she renewed her passport. Gracie explained to the class that the 50 stars represent the 50 states. These are Sosuke's special Japanese figures. He and his brother both have one as this is a special family tradition. Sosuke let everyone hold them and feel how heavy they are because they are made out of metal. Sosuke was a very good communicator when he presented his show and tell. |
