The last week and a half of Show and Tell has been an excellent learning experience for all of grade 1.1. We have collected a variety of food wrappers from around the globe and mapped these outside our classroom on a large world map poster. We discovered that most food in Singapore is imported from other countries. Bread and goats milk were two packages of food from Singapore. Some foods come from countries close by such as Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. Other foods come from much further away in North and South America and France, Germany and the UK. We had an informative Show and Tell from Shoichi who explained the process of seaweed growing, picking, drying, packaging and shipping to countries all around the world. Sosuke shared a package of cereal that had been bought in Japan and posted to him in Singapore as he can't buy it in the shops here. Hugh brought in a tea packet that he had brought from England. We discussed food miles and had a class debate during a P4C (Philosophy for Children) time about pollution from planes flying food around the world. Holly talked about getting eggs from her grandmothers chicken and Hugh talked about getting vegetables from his own garden.
