In order to find out what the work of a palaeontologist is like we did some careful digging of model fossils. We enjoyed being active inquirers by using some replica chisels and hammers as well as brushes to gently scrape away the dirt. Inside we found mini dinosaur fossils. Then we asked and answered some questions just as palaeontologists do when they find new discoveries. This helped us develop our research skills. To connect with our learning in Maths we mapped where on a coordinate grid we had found our particular fossil. The next day we extended our thinking by digging up model fossils from the sand and matched them to examples of different small insects. We made careful observational sketches of the fossils and again worked on answering questions about the fossils as well as coming up with our own questions for further research.
