This week we began presenting our personal time lines for show and tell. We have enjoyed discussing the ages we could sit, walk, run, play and have shared significant events and special memories in our lives.

On Wednesday we had the opportunity to inquire further into living things and lifecycles on our trip to Sungei Buloh Wetlands. We saw many plants and animals including monitor lizards, snakes, birds, spiders, fish, bats, mudskippers and crabs. It was hard to spot many of these creatures because they were so well camouflaged in their environment.
At the beginning of the week some of us were familiar with the lifecycle of some different animals and some of us were unsure what was meant by a lifecycle. We had some discussions and did some peer teaching about what we already know. Then in groups we sorted picture cards of different lifecycles and explained the order we chose. Now we have chosen a lifecycle to research more about with a partner.
We've enjoyed many events this week for Literacy Week. On Tuesday we had a visit from the author Fleur Vella Chang. She showed us how she illustrates books and gets ideas for her stories. She also read us her book 'Afternoon Tea at Raffles Hotel'. We learned how to draw a tiger and then had a go at drawing our own character for a story. Wednesday morning was the book character parade. Everyone looked great in their costumes and grade one did very well to win 3rd place for best dressed! We participated in the book swap and were able to get some nice books to read and it was fun seeing others choose our old books to read. Middle school students came to read to us in Japanese, Mandarin, Korean and English. We enjoyed hearing books in our mother tongue. At the end of the day we went to the library for our mystery reader...Mr Daniel. He read us the book
At the beginning of our new unit of inquiry we have been thinking about living and non-living things and trying to sort many things into these categories. We did a group sorting activity and had some interesting discussions afterwards... Swini - The doll is non-living because it won't change or breathe.
Rania - The doll also doesn't need food. Mikhail - Tangerines are living because they grow from the seed. John - Tangerines are non living because they have been taken off the plant. Keshav - Sometimes robots could actually be living because they don't need anyone to make them. The ones that are not living need remotes. Jiwoo - Robots are not living because you can turn them off and on. Rania - They don't move by thereselves, they need controllers. Amanada - They can't hear and can't drink. They don't have anything in their tummies. Mikhail - Why did Keshav, Sawyer and Siu put chicken in the middle. Sawyer - We didn't know because you eat it. Keshav - We had a question because it was living and now it is not living. Guangyuan - Is dinosaur living or not living? Sota - It is living because it lived a long time ago. Omer - Not living because it can't move. Ella - It was living long ago but not in the world anymore so it is non-living. This week we began a new maths unit about measurement. We came up with ideas about what resources we would like to have in the classroom and also proposed some questions for inquiry. The next day we were given most of the resources from our list. We discussed how they could be used and sorted them into their different uses. The categories we came up with were rulers, scales, containers with numbers and things with no numbers. Then we had a go at exploring what we could do with many of the different measuring tools. It was a lot of fun and we are really excited about this new maths unit.
Popplet is a very useful app for making flowcharts. We have learned to use Popplet to present our research about food journeys. We can add text, drawing and images to our Popplets. The basic version of the app is free to download. Here are the saved images of our Popplets.
We enjoyed the annual Lion Dance on Tuesday morning. The lions did a parade around the playground so we could all touch them, then they ate lettuce and oranges and threw some out to the audience. It was great fun to watch. Happy Chinese New Year!
