Ms. Shradha started off our community Show and Tell round by sharing about a health camp which she volunteered at in India. 4000 volunteers work together for 3 days. The roles of people involved were medical, cooks and distributers of food, medicines, soaps, quilts, clothes and shoes. There is a group of ladies and men that work together in Singapore to make the quilts and then send them to India. We saw pictures of many people working together to help sew one quilt. Keshav shared his gold medal which he won with a partner in a gymnastics competition. Gymcraft is a company which works in the community to support and teach children gymnastics. Ella shared about the role of police in the community. She said they had many roles including catching robbers, directing traffic if the traffic lights are broken, helping lost children to find their parents, visiting schools, helping old people to carry bags. Keshav said they also protect Singapore. Amanda asked why Ella had drawings instead of photos. Ella explained that her sister helped to draw the pictures. Swini showed us her toy doctor set and how she cares for her dolls by listening to their heartbeat, giving them injections and putting cream on sores. We discussed the importance of doctors in the community and shared about some visits to the doctor. Zahin also talked about his mum going to the doctor when he was born. Amanda shared about the role of gardeners in the community. She showed pictures of people looking after plants in a park. One was watering the plants and another was cutting the grass.

Siu brought in his ipad to share a video of his family playing badminton together. Amanda asked who was on each team. Siu said he plays on a team with his dad and his older brother is on a team with his mum. The last time they played they scored evenly. A few of us were interested to find out about how to play badminton. Sota explained the rules to us as he also plays badminton. Sophia brought in her new Hello Kitty toy to show us. It had lots of removable parts which could be exchanged for other parts. Keshav asked how it connected to team work at home and Sophia explained she gets her daddy to take the parts off as some of them are difficult to remove. Jiwoo asked what the toy was made of as well as where she got it from. When Sophia explained it was from a Hello Kitty hotel in Malaysia Zahin asked how she got to Malaysia. Sophia said she went on the bus. Omer showed a picture of himself and his sister playing in some toy cars. Jiwoo asked where it was and Keshav said he thought it was at Giant Supermarket as he had been there before. Sophia asked where his mum was, Swini suggested she was in the supermarket. Omer said his mum was shopping.
Keshav shared the game Monopoly with the class which requires team work to play. He explained the role of the banker and the role of the other players to buy places and charge other players who land on places they have bought. He explained that when he plays with his grandparents they have to talk about decisions together and agree on what to buy. Sota was excited to tell us that he also has the same game and plays it with his mum and dad. Ella showed everyone a game which requires two people to play it. Keshav asked who she plays with and Ella explained it's usually with her sister or mum. Amanda was interested in how to play the game and Zahin helped explain that pressing the buttons bumps the heads. Ella told us she plays the game after doing her homework. A few of us enjoyed trying out the game. Swini brought in some photos of a special lantern she made. She explained her role was to cut heart shaped pieces of paper and her dad helped paste them onto the glass while her mum took photos. The lantern was made for the lantern festival her family were celebrating. Jiwoo was interested in how she made the handle so Swini explained she had to bend thin metal. Keshav asked how she bent the metal to which Swini answered her dad helped her bend it with his hands. Sophia asked how the light works so Swini told us it has a battery. Then Amanda wondered how you turn the light on, Swini said there is a switch to turn it on and off. Amanda shared all about her team work at home with her grandma and auntie. She helps in the kitchen and with setting the table for dinner. Jiwoo showed us how to platy the game 'Who's left'. You need a partner to play and have to ask questions about characters' appearances. We also did some team work to set the game up. Some of us enjoyed playing it with Jiwoo later in the day. Zahin brought in a lego car which he had made with his mum. He used team work as his mum helped him by explaining the instructions and his dad put on the wheels. Ella was interested to find out how it rolled so we took turns at rolling it to people across the circle. Sota brought in some clay models of sea creatures that he made at home with his mum. He explained he took 3 days to make the models as the clay had to dry and harden before he could paint them. Gaku showed a picture of his family and friends playing a Japanese board game which is similar to monopoly. Amanda was interested to find out more about what the board looked like. Jiwoo asked how to play and Keshav wanted to know what all the different colours were for. Swini asked who made took the photo.
Our first unit of inquiry this year in Grade 1 is 'Sharing The Planet' with the central idea 'Working together strengthens communities'. To begin our inquiry we worked in groups to plan and build a school...there were some challenges for each of us! One team member couldn’t speak, another could only use one hand, another couldn’t see and the other couldn’t move around the room. During this activity we began to understand the importance of working together to support one another. Some of us tried to work on our own and then realised it was difficult to do. These were our reflections after the task... Keshav - I couldn’t talk, so I used hand gestures. I feel proud. Amanda - It was very difficult because in the classroom you can normally talk. Ella - It was easy, I could do actions and get things. I could cut. Swini - I was sad because when I couldn’t see it was hard for me to do anything. Omer - I was sad. Zahin - I held the box because Sophia helped put my hands in the box when I couldn’t see. Sota - It was difficult to put the boxes on, I couldn’t see. Guangyuan - thumbs down Sophia - It was easy to do sticking even with only one arm. Gaku - thumbs up Siu - tired Jiwoo - It was bad, I couldn’t hold and cut. Working Together In Our Class Community To continue building our cooperative team work skills we took part in some challenges, again in groups of 4. The first was 'Your group has 3 pieces of bread between 4 people'. We talked together and agreed on ways to share the bread between us. Each group shared the bread slightly differently, but in the end every team member was happy with the distribution of the bread. Next was the jigsaw puzzle challenge - 'Which team can complete the jigsaw first?' At the beginning of this activity we had to work out a way to solve conflict as group members couldn't agree on which puzzle they would all do. Ella suggested 'rock, paper, scissors' and Swini took a vote in her group. During this activity we started to explore different roles that group members took on. After the puzzles we reflected on roles which we had done. They were the speaker, the person putting pieces together, the person watching and the person passing pieces. We discussed that fact that sometimes we did more than one role during the activity.
We have had an enjoyable week in Grade 1.1 getting to know each other and familiarising ourselves with new routines. A big focus this week was beginning Daily 5 which is our literacy programme. We worked hard on building stamina with our reading. We learned 3 ways to read a book and how to choose books which interest us. We worked on picking a good spot in the classroom where we can focus on reading to ourselves. We also discussed the ‘4 Be’s’ at ISS. Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Honest and Be Safe. To help us remember these we worked together in groups to create lovely paper mache bees to hang in our classroom.
