To help us understand the fractions half and quarter we made some fraction pizzas with different toppings on halves and quarters. Then we wrote a pizza order for the server in the restaurant. We also played a pizza ordering and making game to practice the language of half and quarter.

This week we have been exploring many old items. We tried to work out what they were, how they were used and if they were used in our parents or grandparents time. We made comparisons between a typewriter and an ipad using a Venn Diagram to sort our ideas.
On Tuesday Grade 1 had the opportunity to attend some different workshops planned and led by the Grade 5 students. These workshops were a result of many weeks of group research about a theme they were all passionate about. Grade 1 visited 'Music', 'Environment' 'Food' and 'Sports'.
To tune into our last unit of inquiry 'Where We Are In Place and Time' with the central idea 'The World Has Changed During Our Lifetime' went explored changes in railways. We took the MRT to the old railway station. This had a driverless train. At the old railway we looked at the old train tracks, old station and old signs. Then we went to Dairy Farm Nature reserve for lunch and found out about other changes which have occured over time in Singapore.
Grade 1 were in charge of Earth Day celebrations at ISS this year. We created some paintings of the Earth and discussed why the Earth is so important to look after. On Friday 20th April grade 1 students announced the beginning and end of Earth hour using a mega phone. All classes switched off their lights and aircon for the hour. We also went to the garden to take care of the plants. We had three groups, one weeding, one clearing dead leaves and one planting.
We had some sessions in the library this week to work on our note taking skills for personal research. We learned to use video clips and pictures, note key words and then write a summary sentence. We have been using this skills back in the classroom to research how plants have adapted to live in different environments.
We have had a potato sitting in our classroom for about a month. It started to grow some sprouts. We noticed this changed and wanted to research more about planting potatoes so new ones could grow. We had a discussion about whether potatoes had seeds inside or not. Then we cut the potato open to have a look and found there were no seeds. We watched a video about planting potatoes and Shoichi remembered he had read a book in Japanese in the library about planting potatoes. He went with Erica and Sosuke to check it out. Then Erica, Sosuke and Shoichi helped translate it into English for us. Next we went to the garden and planted our potato in a pot of soil and gave it plenty of water. Now we are waiting to see if any new potato plants will grow. If they do, we have decided we want to eat them!
To help us explain the lifecycle of different animals we made some short animations using the istopmotion app. We created our own props as well as sourcing useful resources from the classroom. Then Mr. Gallagher came in for a lesson to teach us how to use the app effectively. Here are some photos of the process. To see our final animations please come to our student led conferences on Tuesday 17th April. More details to follow about this event.
For the past 6 weeks Grade 1.1 have been exploring poetry. We've read and written many different types of poems. We used English and our mother tongue too. The types of poems we explored were alliteration, acrostic, diamonte, cinquain, free verse, rhyming and shape. After drafting and conferencing with Mrs Hayward we published our poems into a booklet. Then we practiced performing some of them with a partner. We chose our best two to prepare for the parent poetry cafe. To help us practice we read our chosen poems to our grade 4 reading buddies. We also did some work on book creator online to create an ebook version of some of our poems. These will be shared at the student led conference coming up in April. On Thursday, 15th March the parents came to watch our final performances and then we shared the other poems in our books with them. Enjoy the videos and photos of our poetry performances below.
A few weeks ago a Grade 9 drama class came to interview us to find out what we know about the lifecycle of a butterfly. Then they prepared a drama for us all about the lifecycle of a butterfly. On Monday they came to Changi Hall to perform their drama for us. The costumes and props were bright and colourful and we learned lots of new facts about caterpillars and butterflies. Our favourite parts were the dance and touching the paper flowers.
