Grades 3,4 and 5 were away on camp this week. We took advantage of that and went down to the Football field at lunch break. It was great having lunch under the magnificent Rain Tree. We just ran around, turned cartwheels, danced, played Soccer and collected seeds and leaves. We should do this more often :)
We have inquired into how conflicts occur between two individuals and between groups. in the last few weeks of our inquiry we looked at internal conflicts - our fears and apprehensions and ways to overcome and manage them. An important strategy we have been exploring is SELF TALK. It prepares you to be a Risk-taker and not be afraid of new experiences. What does this sound like?
" I can do it!"
" I'm going to try."
" I'm going to try again."
" I believe in myself."
" It's OK to make mistakes."
" I'm brave."
It is equally important to encourage and cheer friends to boost their confidence. We saw a lot of that happening at the Forest Adventure Course when some students experienced difficulties. Students we Caring and Empathetic.
"You can do it."
"I'm right behind you."
" I'll help you."
" Deep breaths... "
"YOU DID IT!"
Collaborative drawings are great to represent group ideas and experiences : Our trip to Forest Adventure
A very successful day, students were Confident Communicators as they shared their learning journeys with their parents. They were Knowledgeable and Reflective of their achievements as they recalled anecdotes and learning episodes whilst going through portfolios. They demonstrated their knowledge of place value, money denominations and number facts through games and hands-on activities. A lesson in technology for the parents by students was the order of the day and we saw some interesting iStopmotion animation movies being made in the process. Inquiry and Literacy were interwoven as conflict management stories narrated using a Story Mountain. Well done, Grade 1.1!
We have inquired into how conflicts are part of our daily lives and ways in which we can resolve and manage it peacefully. Kelso's Choices has been a great tool for students to manage small conflicts independently and they have been actively practicing it. We have also talked about conflicts between groups and these are big conflicts that need adult intervention .
Taking it further, this week, we brainstormed feelings of Internal Conflicts that all of us experience. Self-talk is one effective was of handling this and to develop confidence and a belief in oneself.
