Our first unit of inquiry this year in Grade 1 is 'Sharing The Planet' with the central idea 'Working together strengthens communities'. To begin our inquiry we worked in groups to plan and build a school...there were some challenges for each of us! One team member couldn’t speak, another could only use one hand, another couldn’t see and the other couldn’t move around the room. During this activity we began to understand the importance of working together to support one another. Some of us tried to work on our own and then realised it was difficult to do.
These were our reflections after the task...
Keshav - I couldn’t talk, so I used hand gestures. I feel proud.
Amanda - It was very difficult because in the classroom you can normally talk.
Ella - It was easy, I could do actions and get things. I could cut.
Swini - I was sad because when I couldn’t see it was hard for me to do anything.
Omer - I was sad.
Zahin - I held the box because Sophia helped put my hands in the box when I couldn’t see.
Sota - It was difficult to put the boxes on, I couldn’t see.
Guangyuan - thumbs down
Sophia - It was easy to do sticking even with only one arm.
Gaku - thumbs up
Siu - tired
Jiwoo - It was bad, I couldn’t hold and cut.
Working Together In Our Class Community
To continue building our cooperative team work skills we took part in some challenges, again in groups of 4. The first was 'Your group has 3 pieces of bread between 4 people'. We talked together and agreed on ways to share the bread between us. Each group shared the bread slightly differently, but in the end every team member was happy with the distribution of the bread.
Next was the jigsaw puzzle challenge - 'Which team can complete the jigsaw first?' At the beginning of this activity we had to work out a way to solve conflict as group members couldn't agree on which puzzle they would all do. Ella suggested 'rock, paper, scissors' and Swini took a vote in her group. During this activity we started to explore different roles that group members took on. After the puzzles we reflected on roles which we had done. They were the speaker, the person putting pieces together, the person watching and the person passing pieces. We discussed that fact that sometimes we did more than one role during the activity.
