As we come to our final week in Grade One we have enjoyed many exciting events. Monday was sports day. It was a great day and we all enjoyed participating the the running races and field events. Congratulations to Sommerset on their overall win this year. On Tuesday we enjoyed a movie together with Grade 1.2, then ate our lunch altogether and after lunch we played a game of California football.

We went to see the Elementary Art Exhibition. It was fun seeing our work on display as well as looking at all the lovely work from the other classes.
A big thank you to all the parents who joined us for the poetry cafe this morning. We were a little nervous to begin with, but all were communicators and risk takers in presenting our poems in clear loud voices. We also enjoyed sharing the goodies we had made with you. Enjoy the photos. Videos will be posted soon.
As well as rehearsing for our poetry cafe this week, we made cheese sandwiches and date/coconut energy bites. A group of us also wanted to decorate the board to welcome all the parents.
We enjoyed our tour around the Images of Singapore LIVE exhibition. We travelled from the 1800's right up to 2018 and experienced some of the significant events in Singapore's history. As there was no photography allowed inside the exhibition here are some photos from the outside.
Keshav read us a poem about Deepavali by Brenda Williams. It had rhyming couplets just like the ones we had written ourselves in class! Siu read a poem in Korean about Spring and translated it into English too. We have really enjoyed listening to poems in different languages for this round of show and tell. Jiyin read us a poem her sister wrote all about trees and why we need them. Swini read us a poem she had previously performed at another school, it was called 'The Lord's My Shepherd'.
This week we have been working through part of the inquiry cycle much more independently. After choosing our topic of interest we wrote some open ended research questions. Next we used books, websites and videos to try and find answers to our questions. We have been taking notes and sketching our findings. We have met many obstacles along the way - but have persevered by refining our questions, altering our topic and sharing useful resources with others. Our self management skills have been developed too.
This week we have been sharing poems. Jiwoo, Ella and Rania all shared poems they had written themselves about gymnastics. Nayonika read a Bengali poem about a river by Rabindranath Tagure. John's was about a scary castle. We heard a Japanese poem by Kenji Miyazawa from Sota. Mikhail found a poem in a book all about friendship and playing games with friends. Gaku shared a Japanese poem titled 'Me, a Songbird and a Bell', by Misuzu Kaneko. He read the English translation for us. Mao also had a poem written by the same poet. It was called 'Is it an echo'. She read it for us in both Japanese and English.
Today we participated in the ISS Elementary school clothes swap. Grade 3 organised this event in support of Global Goal 12 'Responsible Consumption and Production'.
